The Team

Philip A. Cutler

Founder & President

Philip grew up in Westmount, Quebec where he attended Roslyn Elementary and Selwyn House School. In 2005, he graduated from Selwyn House, an all boy's private institution, before heading to John Abbott to pursue his DEC and play for the Islanders' football team. Phil is now pursuing a Degree in Education from McGill University and a member of the Redmen Varsity Football team. Phil was elected to the McGill University Senate as the Education Faculty's representative. He is extremely active in the community and is the co-founder of "When The Bell Rings" a community initiative to get the youth involved in local affairs. In 2009, he came 42 votes short of being elected to Westmount city council. He was heavily backed by a network of young volunteers in an effort to help the younger generation a earn voice on council. He is the head of the Junior committee of the Champagne Memories Gala to benefit the Canadian Alzheimer's Society. As a Laurus Educational Services level 4 instructor, Philip is trained to handle students up to the University level, as well as a wide variety of exceptional students.

Tegan Springate

Regional Coordinator

Tegan is a recent graduate of the University of Ottawa's Education program. She is a member of the Ontario College of Teachers and is certified to teach Kindergarten through grade six. Her experience ranges from private schools to low-income intercity schools, with a concentration on students of diverse educational, cultural and social-economic situations. She has also worked at the Canada Agriculture Museum for the past four years, delivering curriculum based school programs for students in Kindergarten through grade 12. Tegan believes that every child can learn, no matter their situation, and strives to help each student succeed. She believes that her role as a mentor and educator will help students reach their full potential both inside and outside of the classroom.

Olivier S.

Head Tutor (All Subjects)

Reaching academic excellence has always been one of the highest priorities for Olivier. He has always been able to balance school, sports and social life. Having graduated with honours from Selwyn House School, he continued his studies at Marianopolis College in the Health Sciences program. Often at the top of his classes, Olivier consistently made the dean's list (85% average or higher). After CEGEP, he was admitted to McGill University's prestigious Microbiology and Immunology program where he was appointed to the Golden Key Association (top 15% of undergraduate program) in his very first year. In the summer of 2009, Olivier wrote the MCAT (Med School Standardized Test) and obtained an exceptional score of 32 on his first attempt. He is currently pursuing his medical degree at St. George's Medical School. Olivier is a Level 4 tutor with specialties in Sciences, Math & French.

Daphnée B.

Head Tutor (Math & Sciences)
January 2011 - Tutor of the Month

Daphnée graduated from the Honour Science Program at John Abbott College. She was published in the Gastroenterology Journal in 2009 and has given presentations at the 13th Annual Carl A. Goresky McGill Research Day in Gastroenterology as well as at the Canadian Disease Digestive Week in 2010. Presently she in the second year of the Physiology Program at McGill University and continuing a research project with the GI and dialysis departments at the Montreal General Hospital. Daphnée is a level 4 tutor.

Erin M.

Head Tutor (Exceptional Students)

As an Education student at McGill University, Erin's focus has been on children's academic success and motivation for a higher education. During her studies at Royal West Academy and Dawson College she volunteered and worked in a grade 6/7 classroom at the Mackay Center, a school/rehabilitation center for students with special needs. For 5 years helped many challenged students reach academic success through creative instruction and patience. She is a member of the Big Brother Big Sister program at Meadowbrook Elementary School. Her experience working to motivate students and help them to excel in areas of weakness is unsurpassed and is a testament to her true dedication to education. Erin is a Laurus Educational Services Level 3 tutor, with academic focuses on Humanities, History, and English. She is also trained to teach students with learning disabilities of all ranges.

Pamela G.

Head Tutor (English)
February 2011 - Tutor of the Month

Pamela is a recent graduate of McGill University, where she studied a double major in History and Anthropology. She is available to tutor students, of all ages, who are looking to improve their reading, writing and general language skills. Having studied Liberal Arts at John Abbott College, followed by the completion of her Bachelor of Arts at McGill, Pamela can assist students in courses such as Humanities, English, History, Classics, Anthropology and any other course related to cultural studies. Since most Arts courses require students to read, interpret and analyse material, Pamela can assist with "strategic reading," which can help students to optimize their study time. Having tutored at the Essay Writing Center at McGill, Pamela also offers writing advice and can help with proofreading. Pamela is in the midst of applying to law schools for the 2012 school year, where she intends on using her law degree to help provide support and legal aid to Non- Governmental Organisations with a humanitarian cause. To gain experience in humanitarian aid, Pamela travelled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in November 2011, to volunteer in Community Development. Pamela is a level 3 tutor.

Sophie-Andrée M.G.

Head Tutor (Elementary & French)

Sophie-Andrée is currently studying Kindergarten and Elementary Education at McGill University. She graduated from CEGEP Saint-Jerome in Cinema and Communication. She is fluent in both English and French.She has three years of experience as a day camp counsellor working with 5 to 12 year olds. Sophie has classroom teaching experience with grades 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6. She has been employed by Laurus Educational Services for 2 years. Sophie has worked as an on-set tutor for a major Hollywood production. Sophie is a level 4 tutor with Laurus.

Alexandre C.

Head Tutor (Math & Science)

Alex specializes in teaching Math, Physics, Chemistry and any other science subjects taught at the high school and Cegep levels. Being a mechanical engineering student at McGill has given him an excellent grasp of the abstract concepts taught in these courses. Alex has worked as a councillor for three summers at Camp B’nei Brith, where he was responsible for children aged 9 – 14. He has also completed three engineering internships since beginning university in 2008. Alex is a Laurus Educational Services Level 4 tutor.

Andrew R.

Head Tutor (Math & Science)

Andrew is a student at McGill University. He is in the Interdepartmental Honours’ Immunology program. Andrew has been tutoring math and sciences for 3 years and has been working at Laurus Educational Services for 1 year. Andrew had also worked in research at the Jewish General Hospital’s Segal Cancer Center for 2 years in Pulmonary Oncology. Last summer, he presented an abstract at the World Conference on Lung Cancer in Amsterdam, and also spent time tutoring English, painting and doing other work for projects in a village in Fiji . Andrew tutors math and science for grade 10 and 11 and also tutors the following CEGEP courses: Calculus 1, Physics NYA, Chemistry NYA and NYB, Organic Chemistry 1 and 2, General Biology II, and Anatomy & Physiology courses. Andrew is a level 3 tutor.

Deepy C.

Head Tutor (Mathematics)
April 2011 - Tutor of the Month

Deepy is currently a McGill undergrad student in Mathematics and Statistics. She has previous experience tutoring high school math courses of all levels, and is very familiar with the material and difficulties young students often face. She is also available to tutor CEGEP level Cal I and II. Deepy is a level 4 tutor.

Sivaanjan S.

Head Tutor (Math & Business)

Sivaanjan is currently a student at McGill University finishing his undergraduate studies with a major in both Finance and Accounting. He graduated from Champlain College Saint-Lambert with a DEC in Health Sciences. Besides being a part of Laurus Educational Services' Team, he is also a grader for a Business Statistics course at school. He has also volunteered at Nesbitt Elementary helping elementary students with their homework after school. He is comfortable tutoring anything at the elementary, or high school level (especially Math & Sciences), at the CEGEP level: Chemistry I & II, Calculus I & II, Statistics, Linear Algebra, Commerce related courses, and at the University level any courses related to Accounting or Finance Majors. Sivaanjan is a level 4 tutor.

Melissa T.

Head Tutor (Social Studies)

Melissa is a McGill University student in the Faculty of Education with a focus on Kindergarten/Elementary schooling. She has a previous B.A. from McGill in Psychology (minoring in Sociology and Anthropology). Her focus is on helping students succeed for a successful and bright future. She believes tutoring helps students with their academic achievements but also with their identities and self-esteem. Having various work and volunteer experiences with children she has mastered the skills, environment and methods needed to be an effective teacher. Melissa is a level 3 tutor.

Kartik M.

Head Tutor (Math & Sciences)

Kartik is a graduating Chemical Engineering student at McGill University. He has a deep passion for the relationship between technology, the environment, and law. He intends to pursue a career in environmental law and policy. Kartik has over 7 years experience working in a lab and applying scientific concepts and drafting reports. He is a published poet and a Commonwealth Essay Competition Winner. He can provide quality tutoring in biology, math, high school sciences, essay writing and reading comprehension. As an accomplished speaker and report writer, Kartik can also coach students for presentations, projects, public speaking and report writing. He currently mentors students to compete and national and international science fairs. In his spare time, Kartik enjoys writing poetry, playing badminton and conducting fuel cell research at McGill. Emily L.

Head Tutor (Elementary)

Emily is a full-time student at McGill University studying in Kindergarten and Elementary Education. Educating and mentoring young children and youth has always been an aspiration for Emily. As an active member in her community Emily has worked with children in Sunday schools, monitoring and organizing activities such as Halloween for Hunger and 30 Hour Famine. Emily encourages tutoring as it provides children with an opportunity for academic growth and achievement. Emily is a level 3 tutor.

Ashley K.

Tutor

Ashley is a third year Software Engineering student at McGill University. She graduated H.B. Beal Secondary School in London, Ontario, with an average of 99.5% overall. Upon graduation, he received the Elizabeth Scholarship from London City Hall; which is awarded to a top student among the London district high schools. Ashley has been working as a private math teacher for a few years and also worked at Superkids e-learning Center as a math and English teacher. Ashley tutors both math and English. She is a level 2 tutor.

Taraneh T.

Tutor

Taraneh is a U2 Pharmacology student at McGill University. She graduated from Kells Academy before heading to Maranopolis College. In May 2010, she graduated from Marianopolis in Honours Health Science where she also won the Research and Science Award of her graduating class. She has consistently made the dean’s list but, always being on top of her class hasn’t stopped her from getting involved in her community. Taraneh is an ambassador for the Ovarian Cancer Society of Canada and is most proud of organizing many benefit concerts and fashion shows to support the society. Her passion for doing something unique that makes a difference in the world has driven her to travel to the middle east where she worked at a center for children with physical and mental disability. Also, this coming summer, she hopes to volunteer for a humanitarian organization in Ecuador where she will be working on community development and environmental education by assisting in local schools. Taraneh is a level 3 tutor.

Julie H.

Tutor

As a student in the Kindergarten and Elementary Education program at McGill University, Julie works to motivate and improve students' understanding of the various school subjects. She has experience as a tutor, teacher, and day camp animator for elementary aged children. Julie has also volunteered as an instructor in Aviation cadets for several years; providing her with experience working with adolescents. Julie tutors students at the elementary level (K-6) in any subject (excluding French); as well as the English language at both elementary and secondary level. Julie is a level 2 tutor.

Natalia R.

Tutor

Natalia is in her first year at McGill University in Anatomy and Cell Biology. She graduated with Honours from Dawson College where she was a Student Ambassador as a member of the Blue Ring Society. She has enjoyed volunteering with children both at the Westmount YMCA and abroad at a children's hospital in Montpellier, France. In addition, Natalia has volunteered at the Royal Victoria Hospital and dedicates an average of about 80 hours per semester as a member of the McGill Student Emergency Response Team. Natalia has enjoyed tutoring students of all ages since she was in high school. She is a level 3 tutor.

Christina tutors French, English and Math from Kindergarten up to Grade 9 (Secondary 3). She attended elementary school at St-Clément in Town of Mont-Royal and went on to complete her high school studies at The Sacred Heart School of Montreal. Christina is now in her first year at McGill University in a Bachelor in Kindergarten and Elementary Education. Christina is a level 3 tutor.

Tutor

Alex is in his third year at McGill University. He is majoring in secondary English Education and minoring in Ethics and Religious Culture. Prior to McGill, Alex studied Social Sciences at John Abbott College. During the last three years he has completed stages at École Secondaire Pierre-Laporte and John Rennie High School. Last Summer Alex traveled to Italy to teach English and is planning on teaching English abroad again this following Summer. Alex is a level 2 tutor.

Emily is an Honours student at McGill University, studying English Literature. Having conquered a learning disability, Emily knows how challenging school work can be, but she also knows how rewarding it is to succeed. If your child lacks motivation and struggles with learning in general, Emily is here to help! She is capable of helping with English (spelling, pronunciation, diction, essay help, etc.), history, Elementary level math, geography, French, and any organizational help and exam preparation. March 2011 - Tutor of the Month

Wenwen Liu is a recent BSc Architecture graduate from McGill University and previous Arts & Sciences graduate from Marianopolis College. Wenwen works on diverse residential design projects around Montreal, publishes articles weekly and performs regularly onstage. She can assist students undergoing elementary to Cegep level courses in English, French, History and Physics. Her interests include journalism, painting, music and photography. She plans to pursue her MA and PhD in Architectural History. Wenwen is a level 3 tutor.

David M.

Tutor

David spent most of his life in Dollard-des-Ormeaux in the West Island. He graduated from Loyola High School and then pursued a science DEC from John Abbott College. Keeping an active mind and body are equally important to David. This is what led him to graduate from McGill University with honours, to obtain a BSc degree in Kinesiology. David is currently attending graduate school at McGill University where he hopes to obtain his Master’s Degree in Adapted Physical Activity. He is currently writing a thesis on how adults with physical disabilities perceive the impact of their physical education. David is a patient, creative, and motivational tutor who will adapt his tutoring style to best fit the student. He has worked as an English teacher and is well versed in essay writing. He also enjoys tutoring beginners Italian, Math and Science. David is a level 3 tutor.

Caroline S.

Tutor

Caroline will be completing her Inclusive Education program at McGill University this summer. She will continue her studies by doing her B.Ed in the TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) at Mcgill. Prior to McGill, Caroline studied Social Sciences at Dawson College and also went to The Study School for 11 years. Since September 2006, Caroline has been working full-time at Blossom Academy Preschool in N.D.G. She is fluent in English, French and Czech. Caroline is a level 3 tutor, tutoring Elementary Subjects.

Nicholas S.

Tutor

Energetic, committed, and caring - these are some of the qualities Nicholas brings to his tutoring sessions. As an education student in the department of kinesiology and physical education at McGill University, Nicholas believes that teachers do not teach subjects; teachers teach children. Nicholas specializes in teaching all subject matters across the elementary school curriculum from kindergarten to grade 6. He also enjoys helping children make the transition from elementary to secondary school. Nicholas feels comfortable teaching most subjects including language arts (English and French) in secondary 1 (grade 7) and secondary 2 (grade 8). Nicholas is a level 1 tutor.

Samantha B.

Tutor

Samantha is a graduate of Dawson College in the Health Sciences Program. After pursuing her interests as a swimming instructor, she decided to begin her studies at McGill University in the Kindergarten/Elementary Education Program. In her last semester of the program, Samantha has been able to successfully complete three teaching experiences in diverse classroom settings where she has received acclaim from her supervisors and cooperating teachers. Immersing herself in an environment where she can aid, motivate, and ensure the success of her students has always been a target of Samantha’s. Samantha has also worked as a camp leader and private tutor for over the past five years. She specializes in elementary education (K-6) in the areas of English language arts, math, and science, and is comfortable working with high school subjects as well. Samantha is a level 1 tutor.

Jordan Q.

Tutor

Jordan is currently a U1 Microbiology and Immunology student at McGill. He studied in CEGEP at Dawson College in Health Science, First Choice. He began tutoring while at Dawson in his second year, tutoring almost all the standard science courses for Health Science students. This included Calculus I&II, Biology I&II, Chemistry NYA, NYB, Organic I and Mechanics. He is also comfortable tutoring high school levels of math, chemistry, physics, and biology. His style of tutoring is more adaptive than structured. By listening to the student's problems and working through them rather than walking in with a set lesson plan, he is able to appeal to each student's unique needs. Jordan is a level 2 tutor.

Isadore D-F.

Tutor

Isadore begun tutoring during his time at Dawson College while pursuing a DEC in health science. He went on to pursue a BSc at McGill University in Physiology and Mathematics and is currently starting his master’s degree in molecular oncology also at McGill University. Isadore currently tutors at St-Gabriel’s elementary school in Point St-Charles as well as at F.A.C.E high school downtown. By simplifying challenging material and concepts, he is able to help students achieve their highest academic potential. Isadore is also very active in the community volunteering approximately 100 hours a month at EMS Cote-Saint-Luc as a first responder. He also volunteers weekly offering friendship and support to children with special needs and has travelled to several under-developed countries offering humanitarian assistance. He is also an avid violinist and violist currently playing in three orchestras that perform regularly within Quebec and internationally. He is comfortable tutoring high school science(math,chemistry,physics), CEGEP calculus and biology courses as well as any physiology courses. Isadore is a level 2 tutor.

Elise B.

Tutor

Elise is currently studying at McGill University in Secondary Science Education. She attended Champlain-Lennoxville CEGEP in health sciences, where she was the capitan of the Cougars rugby team and was involved with almost every group on campus. Upon graduation in 2009, she left Canada and lived on the Thai-Burma border teaching and providing aid to Burmese refugees for close to seven months. At McGill now, she pursues her passion for education and science and aspires to become a high school science teacher. She particularly strives to bring meaning to subject material in order for students to care about what they learn and enjoy doing it! Elise is a level 1 tutor.

Other Tutors

All of our Tutors are McGill University Graduate and Undergraduate students. They have at least Level 1 Laurus Educational Services training and a grade point average over 3.5 (A-). They are selected based on expertise in specific areas as well as their extra-curricular endeavours.
